The day was the 1st of April, 2012. A young expatriate teacher was hungover at work. His flatmate asked if he wanted to go out that evening.
On the other side of the city, on the islands, a young engineer was enjoying the sun and indulging in fish and rakı, the traditional Turkish spirit, with her friends. They came back to to the city on the last ferry to join a party.
Seeing as her friends were either coupled up or accompanied by work colleages, the young engineer slunk off for a cigarette on the balcony. The balcony was very crowded, and she found herself in close proximity with a young man of questionable nationality.
This was the first time we saw each other and …
“Today I marry my friend,
The one I have laughed and cried with,
The one I have learned from and shared with,
The one I have chosen to support, encourage,
And give myself to, through all the days
Given us to share.
Today I marry the one I love.”
